VastPark and NICTA: Badumna beta : The Metaverse Journal - Australia’s Virtual World News Service
VastPark and NICTA: Badumna beta : The Metaverse Journal - Australia’s Virtual World News Service
VastPark is a developing virtual world platform well known to regular readers. NICTA (National ICT Australia) also has a number of years pedigree in some of the technological underpinnings of virtual worlds. In the case of the collaboration with VastPark, peer to peer (P2P) is the focus. The joint project announced this week involves the release of the beta version of an MMO P2P engine, christened Badumna (which incidentally are a genus of spiders). It’s a promising development and a further shot in the arm for VastPark.

NICTA | Making Sense of Data
NICTA | Making Sense of Data
Across nearly every industry sector ICT has enabled the systematic gathering of large quantities of data. There remains the challenge of making sense of it all. Many industry sectors are drowning in a flood of complex and voluminous data created by the digital revolution. These include security and surveillance systems, medical data and images, financial transaction records, management of electronic documents and environmental monitoring. In order to control, use and understand this data, NICTA is creating new technologies based on research in areas such as machine learning, image and video analysis, natural language processing, knowledge representation and reasoning.

NICTA | Peer to Peer
The Peer to Peer research project investigates innovative decentralised techniques to manage networks and data to provide complex applications efficiently and economically. Service providers have been using the traditional client-server approach to provide online applications such as webcasting, video-on-demand and network gaming, often to millions of internet users. This involves the use of one or more dedicated servers deployed at strategic locations in the network, which users connect to and request services.

How Unconferences Schedule Sessions - Webmonkey
How Unconferences Schedule Sessions - Webmonkey
Most conferences spend months lining up speakers and meticulously organize tracks. That’s why they call this an unconference. The attendees make the schedule. The rosetta stone of the entire event is the sessions grid. For having such tech-happy attendees, it turns out a physical grid works better than any software-based method for tracking sessions. Also unlike other conferences, the schedule shifts throughout the day, like cereal settling during shipping. Many sessions are moved around and some are merged. The latest schedule is always available in the central meeting room.

Publishing Across the Board
Publishing Across the Board
I am still struggling with what we really should be calling the Blogs at Penn State initiative. When we were making the case for investing in a platform I made the call for us think critically about how we should be thinking about this opportunity as so much more than a blogging service. I think some people got it right away, but we are still trying to figure out what the right language is to support our thinking. Really in the last six months or so that original vision is coming to fruition — the Movable Type environment we selected is truly empowering publishing across lots of areas. I’d like to share a couple of them and ask that you help me think about what is the best way to market and communicate it. There are lots of people now saying the Blogs at Penn State name is limiting peoples’ imagination.

Peer 2 Peer University
Peer 2 Peer University
The Peer 2 Peer University is an online community of open study groups for short university-level courses. Think of it as online book clubs for open educational resources. The P2PU helps you navigate the wealth of open education materials that are out there, creates small groups of motivated learners, and supports the design and facilitation of courses. Students and tutors get recognition for their work, and we are building pathways to formal credit as well.

a visual playground. Every week I'll take a popular and known website and reconstruct it by removing all words and images, replacing them with blocks (what is typical in the "concepting" phase of a design process). I welcome and value your feedback, comments or suggestions on websites to deconstruct.

Whilst making Shoot The Summer I've been thinking a lot about the capabilities of the mobile in film making and story telling. I Twittered my thoughts at the Cambridge Folk Festival then converted it to audio using my Mac's text to audio recognition software. I then dropped it over clips filmed on my mobile phone. The results are quite interesting.

To overcome these challenges, and in order to develop a sustainable model for OER production and use, UWC is planning to shift its OER publishing strategy to more closely involve students. We are intending to use the model of “dScribes” that was developed at the University of Michigan and adapt it to our local needs. The RipMixLearners project at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. It is a place where students create educational resources for their peers at UWC and others. Students will work closely with faculty to record all materials (including make audio recordings of lectures) and compile them in an open repository, accessible to other students as a resource to support their course work, and available on the public Internet.

Fake model photography
Fake model photography
With a very little effort, you can take existing photographs of everyday scenes and make it look like they're actually of miniature models. It doesn't take much to fool the mind of the viewer, but there are a few basic rules you can follow to help convince your audience that they're looking at a railway set rather than the real world; see the section on picking the right photo at the bottom of this page. You'll need a copy of Photoshop CS or later to follow this tutorial.
