Twitter for business: 5 ways to tap the power of the tweet
Twitter for business: 5 ways to tap the power of the tweet
Imagine a business tool that lets you broadcast information about your company, listen in on discussions about how people are using your products and what they think of them, and get involved when one of your customers -- or one of your competitors' customers -- has a problem. Imagine a tool that lets you have a conversation with early adopters and influencers who are eager to share what they learn with their friends and followers. A tool that offers something even the best focus groups cannot: genuine interaction with the people who choose to use your products. That business tool I just described? That's Twitter.

The better part of Nokia's smartphone roadmap goes on display - Engadget Mobile
The better part of Nokia's smartphone roadmap goes on display - Engadget Mobile
we're not certain what we're looking at here, but by all accounts, it appears to be a list of prototype devices available to groups within Nokia or third-party development partners. We've filled in as much as we could, adding notes where appropriate. In many (if not most) cases, these devices are available in a series of successive prototype builds that improve on elements of the hardware before they're blessed and released to manufacturing for retail; the availability dates you see here are of the most recent prototype build that we were able to find. Notable goodies include the "Corolla" with a 3-inch VGA display, the "Jig" landscape slider for AT&T, and the "Eitri," a monster QWERTY candybar with a 640x350 display and 5-megapixel camera, but there's a ton of good stuff here, so make a bowl of popcorn, curl up with your laptop, and take a few minutes to digest this thing in its entirety.

levelHead
levelHead
levelHead uses a hand-held solid-plastic cube as its only interface. On-screen it appears each face of the cube contains a little room, each of which are logically connected by doors. In one of these rooms is a character. By tilting the cube the player directs this character from room to room in an effort to find the exit. Some doors lead nowhere and will send the character back to the room they started in, a trick designed to challenge the player's spatial memory. Which doors belong to which rooms?

Google Signs a Deal to e-Publish Out-of-Print Books - NYTimes.com
Last week, American authors and publishers reached an agreement with Google to settle lawsuits over Google’s Book Search program, which scans millions of books and makes their contents available on the Internet. The deal lets Google sell electronic versions of copyrighted works that have gone out of print. “Almost overnight, not only has the largest publishing deal been struck, but the largest bookshop in the world has been built, even if it is not quite open for business yet,” wrote Neill Denny, editor of The Bookseller, a trade publication based in London, on his blog.

Finally, Geoencoding in Lightroom! Announcing my GPS-Support Plugin
Finally, Geoencoding in Lightroom! Announcing my GPS-Support Plugin
Today I'm releasing a beta version of a new plugin for Adobe Lightroom, “Jeffrey's GPS Support”, that adds support for Geoencoding photos from within Lightroom. There are more features yet to add, but it's already polished enough for daily use, offering even the ability to geoencode speed and bearing. Sadly, Lightroom does not allow for a plugin to easily update the “real” per-image GPS information in the Lightroom database, but this plugin takes an approach that should allow geoencoding to be seamless for many. The plugin itself maintains its own set of “shadow” GPS data for each image, allowing you to view and change the data as you like. On export, the plugin inserts the GPS data into the image (into the copies of the images made during the export), so that your exported images are properly geoencoded as well.

SALMON:International Project for Arctic Atmospheric Research
We, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), are conducting a research project for Alaskan middle and upper atmosphere to investigate the earth's environment. In this Web site, we present outlines of the "Alaska Project" and detailed descriptions of our remote sensing instruments. Observational data plots including the newest one are also available. These scientific data enable us to understand various phenomena in the earth's atmosphere and the space, such as aurora, ozone layer depletion, global warming. The observation data are transferred in quasi-realtime from Alaska to NICT in Japan through an experimental high speed link for the next generation internet. The Alaska Project is an international cooperative project between NICT and the Geophysical Institute (GI) of University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).

Understanding Histograms
Understanding Histograms
Possibly the most useful tool available in digital photography is the histogram. It could also well be the least understood. In this article we will look at what a camera histogram tells the photographer and how best to utilize that information. Virtually every digital camera, from the simplest point-and-shoot to the most sophisticated digital SLR has the ability to display a histogram directly, or more usually superimposed upon the image just taken. (The Hasselblad H1, the latest generation of film & digital capable cameras, can display a histogram on the camera grip’s LCD while the image is separately displayed on the digital back’s LCD.) On most cameras though the histogram display takes place on the rear LCD screen, and most cameras can be programmed to do this both on the image that is displayed immediately after a shot is taken, or later when frames are being reviewed.

The inventor behind CNN's election 'Magic Wall' - CNN.com
The inventor behind CNN's election 'Magic Wall' - CNN.com
Throughout the 2008 primaries and the general election, John King, CNN's Chief National Correspondent, has stood before the now-familiar electronic wall map, zooming in and out of battleground states with a few pokes of his fingers. The big map allows King to instantly tally electoral votes, shift swing states from one candidate's camp to another's and highlight red swaths of John McCain turf alongside blue pockets of support for Barack Obama. "Multi-touch is a whole new way of working with the computer where you can actually use more than one finger at a time. That means both hands, that means all ten fingers, that might mean multiple users in front of a screen," says Jeff Han, founder and chief scientist of Perceptive Pixel.

Flashcards, vocabulary memorization, and studying games | Quizlet
Quizlet eats flashcards for breakfast! My mission for Quizlet is to make learning vocabulary not a chore. I know a lot of teachers assign vocabulary to students, but few students actually "absorb" words into their vocabularies after they take their test. Which kind of defeats the purpose, right? So Quizlet is my response - it aims to make learning fun, thus make learning effective. At the very least, it can help students do better on quizzes and tests even if they don't fully "absorb" their words. It was created by a high school student!

HOW TO: Use Web-Based Office Tools Offline
icrosoft recently made a long-awaited announcement that they will be offering Web app versions of some of their Office suite applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. However, it must be noted that users will still need to purchase the full desktop version of Office applications. Fortunately, there are alternatives to the Microsoft Office monopoly with Web-based Office tools from Google, Zoho, ThinkFree and others. And unlike Microsoft, these online Office applications allow you to work offline, which means you can replace Microsoft’s desktop version of Office along with its hefty price tag. Here’s how to setup the most popular of these Web office tools to work in offline mode.
