File-sharing service Drop.io now allows you to geocode your collection of content (files, notes, links, etc.) which it calls a “drop.” In addition to accessing the content via a shortened URL, users can now use a GPS-enabled phone (Blackberry available, iPhone in private beta) or query by location in a browser. All the privacy settings of a standard drop remain in effect, including an optional guest password. The new feature opens up many possibilities, such as with geocaching, where participants use a GPS to go to coordinates and find a cache, usually a note or small trinket. Now, instead of a happy meal toy, the cache could be virtual–files, notes, or anything normally kept in a drop. Drop.io has a few more ideas for how the service could be used.

Flickr has added some aspects of its recently launched Places service, which allows users to browse photos by location, to the Flickr API. Although Flickr is careful to note that the new flickr.places.find API method is not a true geocoding service, it almost functions like one and should enable some interesting location-based mashups. Given a place name, like “San Francisco,” the Flickr API will return an id and url which you can then use to pull in other nearby photos. The Places API call will be welcome news for developers of travel sites or other location aware services since the API provides an easy way for users to see all the Flickr images from a given area without leaving the site.

YouTube announced V2 of its API, and with it the option to search based on location. Users uploading videos have been able to add geotags for over a year, and they’ve been viewable by location in Google Earth for almost as long. There hasn’t been a way for others to access the location data until now. Using the API, you can now search videos by location, or a combination of location and a search term. For example, here is an XML result of videos containing the term “internet” within five miles of Wired’s offices. To implement location search, there are two new parameters, location and location-radius, in the search API. You can find out more in the YouTube API reference.

The YouTube team released an example mashup that merges Gears geolocation and the video geo search. Using the demo application, you can find nearby videos based on your location, maybe even your neighbor’s Firefly tribute movie.

iPhone/iPod touch only: Popular restaurant reservation web site OpenTable has just released an iPhone application that makes finding and making reservations nearby a snap. Find a restaurant by searching or using your location-aware iPhone, pick a time, and make that reservation. OpenTable is a free download from the iTunes App Store, works on iPhones and iPod touches running the latest software.

Adobe plans to demonstrate today a version of Flash 10 working on a Windows Mobile phone, and a spokesperson says an Android version is also in the works. The Flash maker is also working closely with chip-maker ARM to optimize mobile Flash, but as for a version for iPhones (which run on ARM chips): It's "up to Apple."

Now there's a better solution. With Google Docs offline (powered by Google Gears), I can take my little piece of the cloud with me wherever I go. Once enabled, I have a local version of my document list and editors, along with my documents.

Google Docs has yet to take a bite out of Microsoft Office's slice of the productivity pie, according to new data from Clickstream Technologies. The market research firm surveyed its standing panel of 2,400 US Internet users and found that, not only was Google Docs usage relatively low compared to other suites, those who used Google Docs continued to use Office alongside it. Google obviously has a long way to go if it wants to compete with Microsoft, but it still has a chance at growing its productivity market share.

Adobe Systems wants to have it both ways. Microsoft's power with programmers is tethered to desktops and laptops, the vast majority of which run Windows. Google is trying to dominate what it believes is the new frontier, cloud computing, where applications run on the Web. Adobe, though, is trying to run down the middle with a strategy that touches on both domains.
