Embed a dynamic map of a public Google Spreadsheet on your webpage. After loading in your spreadsheet data and customizing the map, you can copy the generated code into your webpage. An example spreadsheet's data and map of great Seattle restaurants has been pre-loaded. You can view the original spreadsheet in HTML or XML. This wizard uses the Google Maps API and Google Spreadsheets API.

Geocoding with Google Spreadsheets (and Gadgets)
Geocoding with Google Spreadsheets (and Gadgets)
Google Spreadsheets now lets people embed gadgets, just like they can on iGoogle, Orkut (OpenSocial), Google Maps (Mapplets), and other containers. Those gadgets can live within the spreadsheet, access un-published data from a worksheet, and manipulate that data into some useful or visual output. There are gadgets for creating timelines, motion charts, word clouds, and now, courtesy of me, a gadget for geocoding data. This is my secret weapon for geocoding small sets of data, and can hopefully help other people out there. Here are the steps for geocoding a spreadsheet with the gadget

Linux on the iPhone: Linux on the iPhone!
Linux on the iPhone: Linux on the iPhone!
I'm pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones as well as the first generation iPod touch. This is a rough first draft of the port, and many drivers are still missing, but it's enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.

Serious Virtual Worlds report : JISC
Serious Virtual Worlds report : JISC
The Serious Virtual Worlds report focuses on virtual worlds for educational uses, and explores the ‘serious’ – as opposed to leisure-based – uses of virtual worlds. One of the problems with this area is that there is a plethora of virtual worlds available and practitioners do not always know which one to use and in which contexts. In order to help practitioners to identify the worlds that are the most relevant for their particular learning context, the report presents an overview of the available virtual worlds, describing in particular the serious virtual worlds that have educational potential or have been used in education and training settings. However, stepping beyond this traditional mode of teacher and learner, the report also aims to foreground how learners themselves are becoming a more central component in the use of immersive worlds, creating learning experiences for themselves and adopting a more exploratory mode of learning.

Hidden TV out features discovered in iPhone 2.2 SDK - Engadget
So, get a load of this. While tinkering within the iPhone 2.2 SDK, ArsTechnica discovered a neat little tidbit that could lead to some pretty extensible applications. In essence, the MPTVOutWindow class enables your iPhone to beam out video to a connected TV rather than the built-in screen

Nokia Quake III gains on-phone server, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support
Nokia Quake III gains on-phone server, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support
Remember when playing Quake III at a decent resolution required a $5,000 Alienware? Man, those were the days. Now, we can't help but be thankful for a few special Nokia handsets (the N95 8GB, E90 and N82 in particular) that can all handle the game by their lonesome. In fact, the latest version of the software adds a few remarkably awesome extras. For starters, users can now take advantage of on-phone server support, meaning that your handset can actually host a Quake III multiplayer battle (and may we recommend the server name "trashaccident?").

I’ve been using an Android G1 phone for more than a month now on a daily basis, but I still haven’t given up my iPhone. The more I use them both, the more that I realize my iPhone is a Mac and my Android is a PC.

ICT Results - The Network of Everything
ICT Results - The Network of Everything
Wireless experts believe that, by 2017, personal networks will have to cope with at least a thousand devices, like laptops, telephones, mp3 players, games, sensors and other technology. To link these devices will require a ‘Network of Everything’. It represents an astonishing challenge, but European researchers believe that they are moving towards the solution. European researchers have just completed work on a networking project to perfect what will become known, perhaps, as the Smart Personal Network. Personal Networks, or PNs, are seen as essential for a world where many different devices must work in sync together, known as 4G (fourth generation). It will mean personalised services, low power devices with cheap, ubiquitous and broadband connectivity

The Army has created a video game unit and will invest $50 million over five years on games and gaming systems designed to prepare soldiers for combat. Lt. Col. Gary Stephens, product manager for air and ground tactical trainers at Project Executive Office — Simulation Training and Instrumentation said Thursday that the $50 million has been approved for a "games for training" program starting in 2010. "The Army takes this seriously,"

Is YouTube the Next Google? - ReadWriteWeb
Is YouTube the Next Google? - ReadWriteWeb
Whenever his son needed any information, he would open up YouTube, type in the search term and then just watch the videos that showed up as matches. He never Googled anything; he never went to any other site; his entire web experience was confined to YouTube videos. It was rather puzzling, I thought. Could it be that there are YouTube videos on any topic? My curiosity was piqued, and I decided to run a little experiment.

CNN quakes as Twitter rapid fires Mumbai news » VentureBeat
It’s one thing when a couple dozen or so tech blogs rally around the idea that Twitter is an excellent source for the quick dissemination of news in the time of crisis — many of us have been trumpeting this fact for months if not longer — but its another when CNN (and not one of CNN’s blogs, CNN proper) says the same thing. One of the top headlines today on CNN.com is titled “Tweeting the terror: How social media reacted to Mumbai.” The opening sentence of the piece is even more to the point, “It was the day social media appeared to come of age and signaled itself as a news gathering force to be reckoned with.”

Mini Friday, the mobile Habbo Hotel, nears 1M users » VentureBeat
The makers of Habbo Hotel, the wildly popular virtual world game aimed at teenagers, have quietly released a mobile version called Mini Friday that is seeing steady growth: It’s about to hit a million registered users. That’s a robust number, keeping in mind that the application requires download and registration, is restricted to users 18 or older, and runs only on select phones (Nokia S60 series). The company also hasn’t really talked about the product.

Every year IBM releases a "Next Five in Five" list, a list of innovations that "have the potential to change the way people work, live and play over the next five years". This is the third such list, and it mentions a "Talking Web" among the 5 items. You will talk to the Web and the Web will talk back, according to IBM. In the future "you will be able to surf the Internet, hands-free, by using your voice - therefore eliminating the need for visuals or keypads."

Tree of Life Web Project
Tree of Life Web Project
The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists from around the world. On more than 10,000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history (phylogeny), and characteristics. Each page contains information about a particular group of organisms (e.g., echinoderms, tyrannosaurs, phlox flowers, cephalopods, club fungi, or the salamanderfish of Western Australia). ToL pages are linked one to another hierarchically, in the form of the evolutionary tree of life. Starting with the root of all Life on Earth and moving out along diverging branches to individual species, the structure of the ToL project thus illustrates the genetic connections between all living things.

Handheld Augmented Reality Project
Handheld Augmented Reality Project
an "augmented reality" game designed to teach math and science literacy skills to middle school students. The game is played on a Dell Axim handheld computer and uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to correlate the students' real world location to their virtual location in the game's digital world. As the students move around a physical location, such as their school playground or sports fields, a map on their handheld displays digital objects and virtual people who exist in an augmented reality world superimposed on real space. This capability parallels the new means of information gathering, communication, and expression made possible by emerging interactive media (such as Web-enabled, GPS equipped cell phones with text messaging, video, and camera features).
