At Stanford, we envision the iPhone as having a profound potential to break barriers in the way we provide information and services to students - in how they converse with the institution, their curriculum, the faculty, and each other. With an enduring entrepreneurial, innovative, and technological leadership, those same qualities that helped shape Silicon Valley, Stanford is in a unique position to chart yet another new course, this time using the iPhone. The University Registrar has contracted with TerriblyClever Design, a student-owned development company, to develop and deploy the initial five iPhone applications. More are coming. These apps are more than just web pages disguised as iPhone apps: These are real apps on the iPhone designed to take advantage of the iPhone itself.

The Apple iPhone's sexy touchscreen with its multi-touch commands has been a huge hit with the public, but such screens can only get so small before clunky fingers get in the way. So Microsoft is extending the concept of the touchscreen beyond the edges of the phone itself. The company's researchers have developed a system called SideSight, which allows you to control a phone placed on a table by wiggling your fingers in the space around it.

If you asked ten random techies to define "cloud computing," you might get twelve or thirteen different answers, but if instead you asked those same ten folks to identify the most overused buzzword of the last year, they'd probably all agree that "cloud computing" was it. Truly, "the cloud" is aptly named, because everyone who stares at the concept sees something a little different. So imagine my surprise when, on attending a session at this past summer's AlwaysOn conference, I heard someone on the stage talk intelligently, coherently, and technically about a topic that I had written off as so much noise. That person was HP's Russ Daniels, CTO and VP of Cloud Services Strategy, and by the time his panel was done, I knew that I had to talk to him in more detail about cloud computing.

FixMyMovie, an online service that let people improve the quality of their videos, is going offline. "We're shutting down FixMyMovie.com on December 31, 2008. In its place, we're launching a new Windows desktop application, code-named Carmel, which will be released in the first quarter of 2009," said MotionDSP, which runs the site, in an e-mail to site members Friday. "If you have uploaded any videos to FixMyMovie that you'd like to keep, we recommend that you use the 'Download' option before December 31 for each fixed movie that you'd like to save."

I'm among the legions who fume when the investigator on the TV show zooms in endlessly on a photo to uncover some minute detail that in reality couldn't have been photographed by any camera. Worst is when the investigator clicks some "increase resolution" button to smooth a bunch of blocky pixels into a richly detailed image. This low-resolution image shows the greater detail that can be shown in the license plate by combining data from several frames of a video. The lower view of the plate is enhanced. (Credit: MotionDSP) Although that Hollywood hokum is an information-theory impossibility with a single image, some limits are lifted when you have multiple shots of the same scene. And a start-up called MotionDSP is working on commercializing that technology to improve photo and video quality.

The first computer mouse was one of many breakthrough innovations originating at SRI. Doug Engelbart conceived of the mouse in the early 1960s while exploring the interactions between humans and computers. Bill English, then the chief engineer at SRI, built the first prototype in 1964. A replica of the original computer mouse—a carved block of wood with a single red button -- is on display in the lobby of SRI's headquarters in Menlo Park, CA.
