As we talk more about thin clients, netbooks, social networking and other devices in Ed Tech that really lend themselves to cloud-based computing, I have to ask myself, could I live in the Cloud? In the ideal little technically-savvy, netbook-driven world I’m concocting in my head, I’m certainly expecting the students (and preferably the teachers) I serve do the majority of their work in the cloud. If I can’t eat my own dog food, so to speak, then something is remiss.

Google gears provides synchronization of online content such that it can be edited even if there is no Internet connection. Our blogging interface was updated this weekend and now supports Google Gears, meaning that all of my drafts get saved inconspicuously on my hard drive and I can continue interacting with the web-based application transparently via my browser even when I’m offline. Not surprisingly, Google Docs benefits from the same integration with Gears, taking a lot of the worry out of moving to a cloud-based platform where, again, that single point of failure (i.e., the Internet connection) can cause all sorts of problems.

Cloud storage and file synchronization is becoming increasingly important as users access the Internet and their data via a plethora of devices - desktop computers with large hard drives, laptops with smaller drives, and netbooks and mobile devices with relatively small internal storage. Newcomer Zumodrive, from Y Combinator startup Zecter, enters this space with an interesting twist. Like other syncing services, Zumodrive creates a drive on your device that is synced to the cloud. But instead of syncing those files with all of your other devices, Zumodrive tricks the file system into thinking those cloud-stored files are local, and streams them from the cloud when you open or access them.

Unfortunately the current state of the ‘Education‘ section of the App Store leaves something to be desired - many of the top apps are poorly designed, and some of the best-selling applications in both the ‘paid’ and ‘free’ sections have fewer than 100 total reviews. I blame this mostly on a general lack of awareness; something that could easily changed if Apple started marketing the iPhone’s learning applications as heavily as it has its games. Think of an activity you do on the Web in a solitary way, and then imagine how that activity would be better if the site knew about the other people that you care about. I read the New York Times every day. In Glazer's model, the Times would show me what articles my friends have read or give me a list of articles where they've left comments. That's kind of a cool idea, and one that the Times is trying to pull off with its Times People feature. Glazer believes that everything on the Web is better if it's social. Checking out a stock? It would be nice to read chatter from other potential investors. Baking a cake? Look at advice from those who have already tried the recipe. Tempted by a new restaurant? See if your foodie friends have eaten there already. The reason we don't do these things now is that the "barriers to social are too high."

I agree with Michael’s points, but I think we have a critical role in helping users with those third and fourth implications. One of the keys to cloud computing right now is synchronization. Very few people I know completely trust their data to the cloud, and they have backups at home or they synchronize across multiple devices so that if one service fails, they haven’t lost everything.
