The “Simulating History” project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, is exploring the “ best potential” for educational computer simulations (sometimes called computer “serious games”) to teach Canadian history.

TwitSeeker is basically an alternate search engine for finding twitter.com users - "twits" - and browsing the results all in one combined control panel. It works by using the twitter.com API, and finds twits not by what's posted in their bios but rather based on what they've been tweeting about lately. It uses a custom tag cloud generator written by the author, and was created as an experimental tool to help users quickly build up a twitter community around specific topics.

The General Services Administration announced on Monday it will be moving the programs that run the federal government's official Web portal from government servers to those operated by a private company, a strategy known as cloud computing. USA.gov and its Spanish language companion site, GobiernoUSA.gov, will be hosted and supported by Terremark Worldwide Inc., an information technology infrastructure company based in Miami. The agreement marks one of the federal government's first attempts at shifting computing resources to the cloud.

PigeonBlog provides an alternative way to participate environmental air pollution data gathering. The project equips urban homing pigeons with GPS enabled electronic air pollution sensing devices capable of sending real-time location based air pollution and image data to an online mapping/blogging environment. Pigeonblog is a social public experiment between human and non-human animals.

Julian Bleecker's paper A Manifesto for Networked Objects Cohabiting with Pigeons, Arphids and Aibos in the Internet of Things (PDF) -- also known as Why Things Matter looks at the rise of what Bleecker calls "blogjects" (objects that blog), precursors to Bruce Sterling's more complex "spime" concept. Simply put, these are networked objects that document on an ongoing basis their locations, their histories, and their purposes -- in essence, telling us their stories. On the surface, Bleecker focuses on the evolution of this technology, but in reality, he's really talking about a catalyst for bringing about the Bright Green future. These are some of his examples:

For bloggers, pictures add 'punch' to your writing via illustration, metaphor or abstraction or may even convey the bulk of a story. Creative commons photos are a treasure trove we will dive into, but you can really stand out by using your own photos! You don't have to be a digital SLR über camera geek; a spontaneous group of bloggers have grouped together sharing their daily 365 photos where most of us are finding a whole new way of looking at the world. But going beyond (can I call it "traditional"?) what we think of as blogging as typing text into a box, you can unlock new realms of creativity by blogging in different containers such as VoiceThread or flickr. We will take a play at a Northern Voice version of a web app I made called "Five Card Flickr" to see what kind of stories we can create using only pictures.
