Wow, imagine that, a cheap, open education at the high shool level that is nurtured and supported by a forward-looking technologists, some awesome teachers, and a supportive administration. That’s what it’s all about, and while doing this stuff is not necessarily dependant on all these factors aligning—for that is rare, indeed— it sure is nice to see teaching and learning blossom when they do! Bully for Fredericksburg Academy for opting for a fast, cheap, and out-of-control appraoch to teaching and learning technologies that basically tells your students that you don’t hate them or distrust them, but rather are intent on giving them an open and elegant space to make their voices heard. Sometimes a little local sharing goes a long way!

The Ultimate Showdown of Content Management System Destiny
The Ultimate Showdown of Content Management System Destiny
Originally presented at South By Southwest Interactive in March, 2009, the Ultimate Showdown of Content Management System Destiny is an “Iron Chef”-style competition pitting three teams of all-star Web developers from the Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress communities against each other to develop the same Web site in each of their chosen open source content management platforms. The goal of the competition is to provide people with decision-making tools that they can use when trying to determine which of these three open source content management systems might be a good fit for their individual needs.

Ajaxian » Every keystroke is a prisoner - a neat commenting trick
when you develop, you will comment and uncomment a lot as you optimise and test your code. This means either inserting lines with comment and deleting those lines, adding and deleting the /* */ by hand or using a shortcut of your editor of choice. In any case, it means highlighting several lines to comment in or out. If you however use the following syntax then you only need to delete one slash to comment and uncomment a section:

RiP: A Remix Manifesto
RiP: A Remix Manifesto
In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride. A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

edublogs: Fresh research showing the damage of filtering 'real world' technology
Students in schools around the world find that their research, creativity and learning potential is seriously curbed by filtering and lack of use of their own mobile and gaming devices in schools. This comes from research spanning the Americas, brought to my attention by its author, Research Consultant Kim Farris-Berg.

Free Technology for Teachers: Free Technology For Teachers: Cloud Computing is Universal
Cloud computing offers some great benefits for education. Cloud computing saves schools money. Google's and Zoho's productivity suites are free for students and teachers to use. Paying for the number of licensing agreements a school district needs to use proprietary productivity software can easily equal the cost of a teacher's salary.

10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits
10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits
I want to talk about taking Portraits that are a little out of the box. You see it’s all very well and good to have a portrait that follows all the rules - but it hit me as I was surfing on Flickr today that often the most striking portraits are those that break all the rules. I want to look at some ways to break out of the mold and take striking portraits by breaking (or at least bending) the rules and adding a little randomness into your portrait photography. I’ll share ten of these tips today and a further ten tomorrow
