Preliminary results from the July-December 2008 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) indicate that the number of American homes with only wireless telephones continues to grow. More than one of every five American homes (20.2%) had only wireless telephones (also known as cellular telephones, cell phones, or mobile phones) during the second half of 2008, an increase of 2.7 percentage points since the first half of 2008. This is the largest 6-month increase observed since NHIS began collecting data on wireless-only households in 2003. In addition, one of every seven American homes (14.5%) received all or almost all calls on wireless telephones, despite having a landline telephone in the home. This report presents the most up-to-date estimates available from the federal government concerning the size and characteristics of these populations.

Far from being just an accessory, mobile phones are starting to be used to collect data in an increasing number of disciplines.

The question of evil and where it lurks has been largely ignored by the scientific community, which is why a recently released study titled “The Spatial Distribution of the Seven Deadly Sins Within Nevada” is groundbreaking: Never before has a state’s fall from grace been so precisely graphed and plotted. Geographers from Kansas State University have used certain statistical measurements to quantify Nevada’s sins and come up with a county-by-county map purporting to show various degrees of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride in the Silver State. By culling statistics from nationwide databanks of things like sexually transmitted disease infection rates (lust) or killings per capita (wrath), the researchers came up with a sin index. This is a precision party trick — rigorous mapping of ridiculous data.

Docstoc also provides technology through various APIs and Widgets to help facilitate the sharing and promotion of documents across the web. The site has popularized the use of embedding documents throughout the blogosphere and mainstream media.

We investigate how to organize a large collection of geotagged photos, working with a dataset of about 35 million images collected from Flickr. Our approach combines content analysis based on text tags and image data with structural analysis based on geospatial data. We use the spatial distribution of where people take photos to define a relational structure between the photos that are taken at popular places. We then study the interplay between this structure and the content, using classification methods for predicting such locations from visual, textual and temporal features of the photos. We find that visual and temporal features improve the ability to estimate the location of a photo, compared to using just textual features. We illustrate using these techniques to organize a large photo collection, while also revealing various interesting properties about popular cities and landmarks at a global scale.

Using geotag data attached to 35 million photos uploaded to Flickr, David Crandall and colleagues at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, created accurate global and city maps and identified popular snapping sites.

Continuing our earlier recession coverage, a new survey from Pew Research Center indicates that the recession has forced Americans to reevaluate many items that used to be seen as necessities. Americans’ opinions about cellular phones remains unchanged. 49% see cell phones as necessary, roughly the same as in 2006. However 22% have changed to less expensive plan or canceled services. iPod ranks last in list with 4% claiming it a necessity, roughly the same as in 2006.

@manyvoices was an ongoing collaborative story started by Mr. Mayo's 8th grade students in Maryland. The collaborative story was written by over 100 elementary and middle school students in six different countries using Twitter.com. Each student used the same @manyvoices Twitter Account. to contribute their 140 (or less) characters. The story concluded at the 140th entry. At that point, we collectively edited and revised our little Twitter story before publishing it as a small book through Lulu.com.

Penn State Public Broadcasting is developing the Geospatial Revolution Project, an integrated public media and outreach initiative about the world of digital mapping and how it is changing the way we think, behave, and interact. The project will feature a web-based serial release of eight video episodes—each telling an intriguing geospatial story. Overarching themes woven throughout the episodes will tie them together, and the episodes will culminate in a 60-minute documentary. The project also will include an outreach initiative in collaboration with our educational partners, a chaptered program DVD, and downloadable outreach materials.

Our greatest fear was that the Internet would democratize antiquities trafficking and lead to widespread looting. We feared that an unorganized but massive looting campaign was about to begin, with everything from potsherds to pieces of the Great Wall on the auction block for a few dollars. But a very curious thing has happened. It appears that electronic buying and selling has actually hurt the antiquities trade. How is it possible? The short answer is that many of the primary "producers" of the objects have shifted from looting sites to faking antiquities. I've been tracking eBay antiquities for years now, and from what I can tell, this shift began around 2000, about five years after eBay was established. It is true that fakes have been around for centuries.

(State College, PA May 5, 2009) The New Media Consortium is an international membership organization of leaders in the use of technology for teaching, learning, and creative expression. In my previous job, working 14 years in instructional technology for an NMC member, the Maricopa Community Colleges, I experienced the NMC as a member organization. Speaking from both experiences, in this session, I aim to show the resources and opportunities available to PSU staff and faculty.
