Sam Kaplan and Louie Harboe's company, Tapware, is one of the more promising technology startups in Chicago. Based in Hyde Park with guidance and a bit of seed funding from one of the University of Chicago' s top business school professors, Tapware recently released its first iPhone application called "The Mathmaster" and has a second app in the works. With as much institutional knowledge of the iPhone development platform as arguably anyone on the planet, Kaplan and Harboe seek to profit from an industry that has spawned more than 1 billion downloads of commercial applications within its first year of existence. For the two seventh-graders at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, Tapware has significantly more upside than opening up a lemonade stand.

Placemaker provides geo-enrichment for the hugely significant proportion of Web content that is geographically relevant but not geographically discoverable. Provided with free-form text, the service identifies places mentioned in text, disambiguates those places, and returns unique identifiers (WOEIDs) for each, as well as information about how many times the place was found in the text, and where in the text it was found. The WOEIDs returned by the service can be passed to Yahoo!'s GeoPlanet™ API for further geographic enrichment and discovery.

Visible Past is a location-aware learning environment geared toward the delivery, discovery, and storage of information, but using the spatial and temporal characteristics of that information as the organizing structure. It is being developed at Purdue University by a multidisciplinary team of faculty and students led by Dr. Sorin A. Matei, Associate Professor of Communication. The heart of Visible Past platform is the data store behind its georeferenced wiki (gWiki). Our idea explodes the common model of wikis by opening read/write capabilities to any/all clients capable of reading and rendering georeferenced data, including Google's Maps and Earth, NASA's WorldWind, location-sensitive mobile devices, and immersive VR environments such as Purdue's Envision Center CAVE, and of course the more traditional, web-based wiki interface common to users of WikiPedia, Wiktionary, WikiMedia Commons.

At Google I/O 2008 the Google Earth API was released. It brought Google Earth's 3D capabilities to the web (with the help of browser extensions). Since that release they've started supporting Macs. One really nice part of the Google Earth API is the ability to create games in the 3D world. One of the sample apps was the game Milk Truck. Since the release there have been some games, but now the day before Where 2.0 there's a new one that been released. Frank Taylor of the Google Earth Blog just posted about Ships, a new ship simulation plugin that uses the API ( Frank's movie review). It's one of the Plugins he's going to dissect in his Google Earth workshop at Where 2.0 tomorrow (use whr09rdr for 20% off that last-minute registration).

This summer, sculptor Antony Gormley invites you to help create an astonishing living monument. He is asking the people of the UK to occupy the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London, a space normally reserved for statues of Kings and Generals. They will become an image of themselves, and a representation of the whole of humanity. Every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break, a different person will make the Plinth their own.
